Thank you, BUHS Jazz Band!

The weather forecasts earlier in the week were iffy, but Thursday, May 29th, turned out to be nearly perfect for a delightful concert on the Christ Church lawn by the Brattleboro Union High School Jazz Band. Thirteen young musicians, including a female vocalist, led by Director Alex Brady, serenaded an appreciative audience with familiar and new pieces from the jazz repertoire.

Most players performed several solos, which were met with enthusiastic applause. A slight breeze posed occasional challenges, but the professionalism and poise of Band members were very apparent; the drummer literally did not miss a beat in his solo when his sheet music took flight!

The concert, planned by the Events Committee of the Christ Church Guilford Society, Inc., was one of several that have been launched over the past few years as the 1817 historic building has been closed for safety reasons. The Board of the Society has successfully repaired the roof, thanks to a $20,000 matching grant from the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation and other grants, loans and private donations, and dozens of Christ Church supporters have also contributed funds for repairs and routine upkeep. Work has been done on the tower, which was damaged by a lightning strike in September 2023, and grants are being sought for repairing the ceiling and painting the front of the church.

In early July, “Christ Church Guilford Past and Future: An Exhibit” will be mounted at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Brattleboro. Keep your eyes on the website for details!
